BICABinga Institute of Conservation Agriculture

Why Zimbabwe needs BICA

Families, centres, hospitals, courts, churches and employers across the country meet the same wall: what happens after treatment?

The same gap, seen from every side

Treatment ends. Life continues. Without work, a home and people who stay in touch, recovery is hard to hold. BICA is built for the long middle and the long after.

Families

You are told the programme is over and the person is "better". You know they have nowhere to go and nothing to do. BICA offers a 12 to 24 month stay, a trade and a place to return to.

Register someone

Rehabilitation centres and clinics

Your clients relapse because the world they return to has not changed. BICA is the next stage of your pathway, with step-down care and aftercare.

The partnership model

Hospitals, courts and social services

You need somewhere to refer people for long-term, structured care that is more than a bed. BICA accepts referrals from every province.

Refer a person

Churches and community leaders

You carry the burden of members who are struggling and elders who live alone. BICA gives you a place to send them and a partner to work with.

Employers and buyers

You need trained artisans and reliable suppliers. Our graduates come with certificates you can verify, and RootWorks businesses supply produce and services.

Relatives in the diaspora

You worry about a parent living alone. Companion visits, reports and a family dashboard show you what is happening.

About Companion

Why a campus in Binga serves the whole country

Land, water and space are in Binga. People are everywhere. So the campus is the hub, and everything else is built to reach out: online registration and referral, regional referral points, remote aftercare by phone and video, Companion for elders in their own homes, and RootWorks satellites in other towns.

Evidence we build on

  • Relapse rates for drug dependence are comparable to other chronic illnesses (McLellan et al., JAMA, 2000).
  • UNDP-supported training in Binga reached 207 young people in trades and 136 more in business skills (UNDP Zimbabwe, March 2026).
  • Conservation agriculture is a validated climate strategy, with adoption barriers for vulnerable groups that BICA is designed to lower (Chazovachii et al., 2025).
